Managing Diabetes at Home: A Caregiver's Guide

Diabetes management can be challenging for seniors and their caregivers. With proper planning and support, it is possible to maintain good health and prevent complications.

Understanding Diabetes in Seniors

Diabetes affects how the body processes glucose. In seniors, management requires attention to blood sugar monitoring, medication management, diet and nutrition, physical activity, foot care, and recognition of complications.

Blood Sugar Monitoring

Establish a routine checking blood sugar levels at the same times each day — typically before meals, two hours after meals, and before bedtime.

Medication Management

Ensure medications are taken at the correct times and dosages. Use pill organisers and set reminders.

Meal Planning

A diabetes-friendly diet includes balanced meals with lean proteins, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates.
